Social enterprise superhero is Erica Hogan for The Piper Project

Erica and Spencer Hogan started The Piper Project shortly after losing their daughter. They have collected and donated over 2,100 pounds for the Sault Area Hospital Maternity Unit over the past year.

The Piper Project has been in the headlines in recent months for its new book drive aimed at instilling a love of reading in newborns. Erica and Spencer Hogan lost their newborn daughter in 2020 and from there The Piper Project was born. The objective is to collect books which will then be handed over to the maternity ward of the Sault region hospital.

Startup Sault Ste. Marie is thrilled to announce the winner of the recent Social Enterprise Superheroes campaign to support and recognize local nonprofits, charities and social enterprises.

StartUP Sault, in partnership with Startup Canada, asked the community to nominate a deserving local organization to receive a $ 150 gift basket of local goodies. Cavera Inc. is also generously offering a two hour digital marketing strategy consultation to the winner.

Thirteen different organizations were nominated and The Piper Project came out on top with the most votes. The next five nominations included the Klub Community Wellness Center, Grocer 4 Good, Habitat for Humanity, Pauline’s Place and Sault Ste. Marie Coup de Main.

Describing why the Piper Project deserved this gift, one of the proponents commented, “This project started in the darkest times and shed so much light on our community. He supports every newborn born at the Sault Area Hospital, where everyone will come home with a new children’s book to spark a love of reading and promote a healthy love for literacy.

Project Piper was started by Erica and Spencer Hogan after the loss of their newborn daughter in 2020. To date, more than 2,100 pounds have been donated to the Sault area hospital.
