Leith-based social enterprise wins sustainability award

THE EDINBURGH Remakery, an environmental social enterprise, has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

The social enterprise, based in Ocean Terminal, Leith, has been recognized for its environmental sustainability, coupled with the growth of its business.

The Edinburgh Remakery teaches and adopts sustainable repair and reuse practices to prevent valuable materials and resources, such as electronics, from being wasted, and to reduce pollution and carbon emissions.

In this way, social enterprise responds to the urgent need to transform the UK economy into one that is more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.

The Edinburgh Remakery, based in Ocean Terminal, Leith, and now a recipient of the Queens Award for Enterprise.

Putting people and planet first is at the heart of our operations, and this award is a triumph for the circular economy and its vital role in helping Edinburgh and the UK achieve their ambitious net zero goals, putting end waste and pollution and help people waste less, live more.

In 2021, the Edinburgh Remakery collected 39 tonnes of e-waste collected from businesses and individuals across the UK, 352 people learned repair and reuse techniques to help them repair and extend life of their property, and 412 free electronic devices were given to people. in need in Edinburgh to tackle digital poverty and social isolation.

Now in its 56th year, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the nation’s most prestigious business awards, with winning companies eligible to use the prestigious Queen’s Awards emblem for the next five years.

The Edinburgh Remakery is one of 31 organizations in the UK to be recognized for sustainability. The Edinburgh Remakery team will travel to Buckingham Palace next month to officially receive their Queens Award for Enterprise.
